Humans of T-shirt: Meet Provider Choice Team Lead, Bec

Bec Dalton is one of our Team Lead superstars at Provider Choice.

With a wealth of experience in the disability sector, Bec joined our team in May 2021 bringing a vibrant energy and enthusiasm.

She has shared what it’s like being a part of the T-shirt Ventures family, and what she finds most rewarding about her role.

Tell us about your role?

I'm the proud Team Lead of an amazing group of six Plan Managers, ‘The Jalapeno Hotties 🌶’.

There are two main things that I'm responsible for on a daily basis.

First, being the go-to person when situations are a little trickier than usual, require a little more complex problem solving or expertise, or when tough calls are needed.

Second, making sure my team is feeling ok every day. This means checking in with them regularly (we do this a few times per week), making sure we're connecting and staying close-knit and supportive of each other, offering support and advice on those ‘off’ days we all have, and making sure my team is always learning and growing.

How long have you been working at T-shirt Ventures, and what drew you to the role/company?

I'm a spring chicken and only started in May this year, but I've been working in the disability industry for eight years. I began my career as a Support Worker when I was 21 years old and worked my way up to various leadership roles from there, including working as a Group Home Coordinator.

I randomly stumbled across Provider Choice (T-shirt Ventures’ Plan Management business) when I was searching for an easy-to-understand guide on NDIS housing options for my previous clients. Provider Choice has some really helpful guides on their website. Digging a little deeper, I became really excited about their innovative products, values and culture. I felt like Provider Choice was a train I needed to jump on!

Ultimately, I’ve always wanted to do something that makes a difference in the community. So, I feel like I’m in the perfect role!

You’re at a BBQ with a friend who asks you: “what’s it like working at T-shirt Ventures?” What do you tell them?

Vibrant, exciting, innovative, collaborative and supportive.

Ever since I started here, everyone has been really enthusiastic and willing to bring new ideas to the table. People seem to connect with, and support each other in an intuitive way.

In our Perth office, we all sit closely to one another and are really engaged across the board. Whenever someone needs a hand, there are always people ready to help out. There’s a connection between departments within T-shirt Ventures that you don’t always get at other companies.

What's the most rewarding part about your role and working at T-shirt Ventures?

The disability industry is already a rewarding space to work in. When you’re working with people whose lives can be quite challenging, you just want to help them however you can. It is a wonderful experience knowing you can make a big difference to someone’s life, and become a person they can trust and lean upon.

I also love working with people and seeing them develop. That’s the most rewarding part of being a Team Lead – building people up internally, teaching them how to handle more responsibility, and seeing them eventually come up with their own projects that add value to the business.

You've been nominated as living our company value, ‘Big Hearts’. What does that value mean to you?

I think everyone at T-shirt Ventures lives this value every day! It shows in how I see the team interact with their participants, but also with each other. To me, having a big heart is demonstrated by going beyond listening. It’s putting yourself in someone else's shoes to see a situation from their perspective, really empathising with them. When you do that, you can't help but care for people and offer support however you can.

You have to have a big heart to work in the disability space, and be a genuine and supportive person that’s willing to listen, advocate and problem solve. I think our People & Talent team does an awesome job at recruiting people who live the T-shirt Ventures values.

At T-shirt, we’re looking for people with passion, grit and integrity to join our team and ‘wear our T-shirt' every day. We look beyond just resumes and into the heart, stories and life experiences of the people we hire.
